Silent Hill
Saw Silent Hill last night with Jake and Brian. I was incredibly relieved to find that this had been to video game movies what Sin City was to Comic Book movies. Which is to say, very good and lifted almost entirely from the actual game. This included not only the creatures but some of the plot and ever several of the shots from the game. Also, much like Sin City, it managed to actually work on-screen without seeming like it was being hokey. It helps that the Silent Hill series is one of the better scripted games out there and probably the best in the survival horror genre.

As for the details, the movie is beautiful in it's gruesome display of torture. So many of the little background horrors from the game were translated into disturbing displays of pain. While this might sound like it would be tipping the scales from horror to just plain disgusting (and at times it teeters fairly close), the way in which it is done gives you just enough detail to let you know what is happening without being too gratuitous. The effects themselves were amazing and they even managed to make Pyramid Head (one of the more well known baddies) seem menacing. It even manages to fit a good amount of plot considering all the blood and guts. It pretty much spends five minutes towards the end explaining everything to you but that's ok because 1) You would normally have about 20 hours to piece it all together in the game but don't have the time for that in the movie and 2) There were STILL people that didn't understand what was going on. I don't want to ruin the plot or anything but it is worth mentioning that Sean Bean manages to survive a movie.

All in all, I look forward to the DVD so I can see the "behind the scenes" stuff. A

Man aw hell yeah.

That movie was definitely the best video game movie I've seen that I can recall, and also a pretty decent horror/suspense/gore flick in it's own right. Broke down a little for me at the end when the lead actress' abilities weren't compelling enough to do the whole "Your religion is FALSE!" thing believably, but then, one of the cooler truly demonic bad guys shows up and rains blood on the scene, so there ya go.

What I liked most about the film, I think, was doing a psychological reading of it- it practically screams out for one.

No, what I liked most about the film was that when it was good, it was as good or better than anything in the Hellraiser series (well, Pinhead is better than like anything, but anything else from a Hellraiser flick) and when it wasn't that good, it was light years better than boring old first three quarters of any given Hellraiser movie.

Okay, maybe I liked the hellworld effects the most.

Or Pyramid Head's grand daiklaive and his entourage of screaming human-fced cockroach things.

Anyway, yeah.

Compared to Serious Cinema, or at least Ghostbusters:

B+

Horror Movie Rating:

A
